Lily's Post on Wednesday, 28 October 2015
A while ago Nicola said that our class would go out side and rotate around and measure different things with metre and cm rulers . Our groups first thing to measure was the forest path . Before we started measuring we needed to do an estimate of how long the path would be . Monique and I decided to buddy up and work together . It took so long to measure from the top of the hill to the bottom because it was quite steep . Then we moved to our next station and went on and on when we finished our 4th station we all went inside.

Meera Bai's Post on Friday, 23 October 2015
On Wednesday my class went to the senior playground to measure it. The formula for finding out the area of the senior playground is length x width. We all partnered up and I was with Ryder the amazing. We used meter rulers to measure the senior playground and we also marked it with pencil to help us count the measurement. I thought it was quite fun partnering up because I like working with people.

Report - Giraffes
Did you know that the giraffe is the tallest animal in the world and every giraffe has its own unique pattern?
A giraffe has a large heart so it can pump blood to its head and legs. Girafffe can only sit down for 10 ro 12 minutes that is why they lean their head on their back because if they sit down for too long they will die.
A baby mammal looks like a mini version of the adult. Mother mammals feed their babies milk. Horses are mammals as well as giraffes and elephants. Did you know that a female giraffe is called a cow, a male giraffe is called a bull, and a baby is called a calf?
Giraffe live all over Africa. They can live in grasslands or places with green grass. A giraffe is a herbivore, that means they eat plants. A giraffes favourite food is thorns and leaves.
Giraffe are getting hunted down by poachers. Poachers are people who hunt and kill animals illegally. Once, in the olden days, there were lots of giraffe but people hunt and kill too many giraffe so the numbers are much lower now. There is only 450 of a certain kind of giraffe left in the world. Cows and bulls live until they are 25 years old but they can live for longer in the Zoo.

Mitai and the Seven Sisters
Once there lived an adventurous kid name Mitai. Mitai could eavedrop on his brothers conversations and transform into a bird.
One day mitai and his brothers went hunting and they heard the most beautiful singing in the world. They all went over to see who was there. Mitais brothers all immediately fell in love. Mitais brothers took their girlfriends to the village and made them their wives.
Mitai realised that his brothers were only getting food for their wives and they themselves were becoming weak. The wives never left their houses but one day Mitais noticed that they were not there. Mitai saw a fantail fly out of one of the houses followed by six more fantails. He transformed into a Kereru followed the fantails. Next the fantails transformed into his brother's wives. Mitai heard the wives planning to starve the brothers.
Mitai returned to the village to tell his brothers that their wives were planning to starve them but they just said "you are jealous." "Well look are yourselves", said Mitai. The brothers all looked at themselves and then believed their brother. Mitai asked the elder to sew a magic net to capture the evil wives.
Mitai and his brothers waited for what felt like hours for the evil wives to return. Finally they did and on their return Mitai and his brothers leaped up and caught the evil wives. Mitai tranformed into an albatross and flew to the god of the stars holding the magic net with the evil wives in it. Mitai asked the god of the stars to throw the evil wives far, far away.

Mitai and the Seven Sisters
Once there was a man called Mitai and he had seven brothers that were very handsome. Mitai's brothers were never thinking of getting married because they were to handsome for anyone.
One day his brothers went hunting for food and they saw the most beautiful wahine. Their hair was as gold as shooting stars. Then they took the wahine back to their village to gt married. Mitai wasn't happy with thei r wives.
Mitai saw seven birds on a tree and they were the seven sisters so mitai listened to what they were saying. He heard them saying that they were planning to starve the brothers. Mitai ran back to the village to tell his brothers that their wives were planning to starve them to death. Mitai's brother did not believe him so Mitai said, "look at yourselves, you use to be handsome and strong and now you are weak." Mitai's brothers looked ath themselves and agreed.
The brothers went to see Te Rawhara to get a magical net to catch the seven sisters. Once Mitai had caught the seven sisters he tranformed into an albatros and took them heavens Today the seven sisters are still up in the heavens.

Matariki
Did you know that the Seven Sisters is a synonym for Matariki? Matariki also represents the Maori New Year.
When the stars are shining brightly it indicates warm weather ahead and when the stars are dim it is going to be quite cold.
When Matariki is in the sky it is a good time to plant winter crops such as brocolli, cauliflowers, carrots, peas, potatoes and more.
It is a time to forgive and forget.

Why are freshwater habitats important?
Some animals live in freshwater habitats for example, fish, hippos, and crocodiles. Animals need to drink so if we get greedy there might not be any water left.
1% of the worlds water is available for humans. 70% of the worlds water is ice and 29% of the worlds water is not available because it is too far down in the ground.
If we litter by the river the river will take the rubbish into the sea and pollute the sea. Don't waste water - people need water!

SCHOOL TRIP TO KELLY TARLTONS
On Friday morning the whole of the Pohutukawa Team went to Kelly Tarttons.
When we got to Kelly Tarttons we listed to the rules. First we went to see the stingray feed, they are the biggest stingrays in New Zeland. Next we had morning tea. After morning tea we went to see the peguins swimming in the water. Next we split up into groups and had fortyeight minutes to do anything we wanted to do in our groups.
We had lots of fun looking around Kelly Tarltons. First we went to a room that had lots of old things inside. There was a challange, it was to put your hand in icey water for two minutes. I tried and only managed to do it for twenty seconds. Next we saw the giant squid, it was huge! After that we went to a shark area with shark games. Next we went to an animal trail. The last thing we did at Kelly Tarltons was go into a room and learn about water. Finally we all went back to school on the bus.

The Search For Pluto
Once there was a planet named Pluto, on that planet there two marvelous aliens. Their names were Binkle and the other one was bonk, together they were named the Binkle-bonk brothers. Like I told you they lived on Pluto, they didn't even now it! So one dark day as usual they decided to take a trip to Pluto in their huge sparkling rocket ship. When they finished packing all of their silly food like banapples, that is an apple wrapped in a banana peel, and a chocberry which is a berry but it is delicious chocolate. Then they turned on the blasting blades of the rocket ship and started going. The searched up and down, side to side, here and there and diagonally but they still couldn't find it. Then Binkle said "it's incredible!"So they looked around their miniature planet and there right in front of them was a gigantic sign that said THIS PLANET IS PLUTO! That's just annoying!

On the Earnslaw
On the Earnslaw
In the exciting holidays I went on a boat named the Earnslaw to a stinky farm. The farm had greedy cows, wooly sheep, obedient sheep dogs, christmas deers and humungous lamas. The Earnslaw runs on coal and it smelt pungent. I saw the sheep dogs stressfully round up the scared sheep. I felt delighted that the sheep did not get cut by the sheering.
